Carol Nunnelley
Director Associated Press Managing Editors Credibility Roundtables |
|
|
Carol Nunnelley is director of the Associated Press Managing Editors National Credibility Roundtables.
In 2001, the project worked with more than 60 newspaper partners in 49 states to translate national credibility findings into the every day work of local journalism. Editors at those newspapers organized community conversations about local coverage that raised questions about accuracy, sensationalism, bias, the coverage of race and diversity, and other issues. Editors then used the public's insights to explore ways to refine their coverage and restore credibility within their local communities.
Nunnelley, on leave from The Birmingham (Alabama) News to launch the roundtables, has been managing editor there since 1992. During her career at The News, she also directed local news coverage as city editor, reported and edited special projects, covered race relations, supervised neighborhood sections and organized reader groups. She led a program to improve accuracy. During her time as managing editor, The News has won recognition for religion, sports, and public service reporting.
An Alabama Journalist of the Year, Nunnelley is a member of APME's Board of Directors and co-chair of the Alabama Center for Open Government. Nunnelley chaired national APME committees on journalism education, photos and graphics, and newspaper readership.
She is a graduate of Samford University and did graduate study in sociology at the University of Kentucky. |
