John K. Hawks, APR, is a professional association manager specializing in travel-related nonprofit trade organizations. He has served as a senior executive for travel trade groups longer than almost any association manager currently working in the industry.
He began his travel career in 1989 with Host Communications, one of America's largest association management firms. Progressing through the company, he became senior vice president of the National Tour Association (North America's largest nonprofit trade group for tour operators). In addition, he managed the operations of the National Tourism Foundation and National Tour Marketing Services, Inc., and he worked with Host's numerous travel clients (including the Tourism Works for America Council, the National Travel Safety Council, the International Spa Association, the National Limousine Association, United Bus Owners of America, and the Travel & Tourism Research Association).
Currently, Hawks serves as president of the Association of Retail Travel Agents (the largest nonprofit trade organization in North America that represents travel agents exclusively) and as executive director of the Consumer Travel Rights Center (a new nonprofit group dedicated to protecting and expanding the legal rights of travelers).
His nine books include a consumers guide to travel law, a travel careers directory, NASCAR's official travel guidebook, several travel training textbooks, a travel sales planner, and an expose of the legal pitfalls facing nonprofit groups today. He served as founding editor for two travel trade magazines (Bank Travel Management and The ARTA Agent) and as executive editor of two additional travel magazines (Courier and Tours!). He has completed writing assignments for more than 40 different national consumer and trade publications.
Travel Agent Magazine selected Hawks as one of its "Rising Stars Under 35" for the years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.
He has spoken at numerous travel trade conferences and training seminars, and he co-founded the National Travel Law Symposium (an annual gathering of travel industry attorneys in Washington, D.C.).
Hawks holds the "Accredited in Public Relations" professional designation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and he served a term as president of PRSA's Thoroughbred Chapter in central Kentucky. |
