Janet Sarratt

Janet Sarratt has worked for 35 years at the same school, first East Junior High, and lately John E. Ewing Middle School in Gaffney, S.C. In her tenure there she has seen state of the art technology range from the 16mm projector and filmstrips to computers and all the current technologies we are now encompassing.

Her educational background includes a BS in Library Science from Mansfield State University in Mansfield, PA; an MAT in Education from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.; and an MLS from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Her degrees were earned between 1971 and 1980.

Since 1980, Sarratt has been active in both the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL) and three juvenile divisions of American Library Association (ALA). Among her various contributions with SCASL include being the establishing chair of the South Carolina Junior Book Award, Board Member, Children’s Book Award, and the Award Committee. Some of her various ALA committees include: through the Young Adult Library Services Division (YALSD); Quick Picks for Young Adults, Selected Films (now Video and DVD’s) for Young Adults, the Margaret Edwards Award, and Technology for Young Adults.

Through the Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC), Sarratt has served on the Carnegie Award Committee, and is currently chairing the Great Web Sites for Children Committee.
