How Credible Are Auto Insurance Sites?

Car-insurance shopping sites: Only a first stop

September 12, 2002

Consumer Reports WebWatch, ConsumerReports.org and Consumer Reports magazine teamed up to rate the top-trafficked auto insurance shopping sites. The results were a disappointment. Only one site proved useful, and another received our lowest rating for disclosure — a major factor in Web site credibility — and raised some disturbing questions about potential bias in its content.

Correction: This report incorrectly stated Insweb.com's auto evaluation services are available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In fact, they are not available in New Jersey, North Carolina and Massachusetts.
