Robert Mayer, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies at the University of Utah.
In his role at the university, Mayer researches the U.S. and global consumer movements as well as the need for, and impact of, consumer protection policies. His current research projects address consumer protection and privacy in electronic commerce and consumer implications of genetic testing.
Mayer authored The Consumer Movement: Guardians of the Marketplace (Boston: G.K.Hall/Twayne, 1989), edited Enhancing Consumer Choice (Columbia, MO: ACCI, 1991), and was associate editor (with Stephen Brobeck and Robert Herrmann) of the Encyclopedia of the Consumer Movement (Garland Press, 1997). Mayer's research has also appeared in the Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Consumer Policy, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Advancing the Consumer Interest, Journal of Consumer Education, Journal of Social Issues, American Behavioral Scientist, and the Journal of Advertising.
Mayer presently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consumer Affairs and Journal of Consumer Policy. He is also a board member of the Consumer Federation of America and the National Consumers League, the oldest consumer organization in the world. Previously, he served as ACCI's delegate to Consumers International and as a board member of the Direct Selling Education Foundation.
He has been a visiting researcher at the Norwegian Fund for Market and Distribution Research (1988) and the French Ministry of Telecommunications (1985-86). |
