Take the Pledge
August 4, 2003

Welcome!

We're glad you want to take the Consumer Reports WebWatch pledge:

"I agree to take the Consumer Reports WebWatch pledge, to ensure my Web site adopts the Consumer Reports WebWatch guidelines for improving Web site credibility. I understand Consumer Reports WebWatch will evaluate my Web site to ensure it meets these guidelines."

Note from Consumer Reports WebWatch: The process for reviewing sites will be kept strictly confidential. Should a site not meet the requirements of Consumer Reports WebWatch's guidelines for all sites, we will work with that site to achieve compliance. We will not release or publicize that site's name unless, at later phases in the process, the site refuses to take required actions to come into compliance with the guidelines. Sites that achieve compliance will become part of an ongoing national advertising campaign funded by Consumer Reports WebWatch.

Consumer Reports WebWatch is a project of Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports. For decades, Consumers Union has discouraged the use of any of its published materials in advertising and marketing. For this reason, we expressly forbid companies to publicize your inclusion in this advertising campaign in press releases, on-site testimonial or pop-up ads, or other means.

About These Guidelines
We believe Web site readers should be able to find these policies easily, on an "About Us" or "Site Center" page navigable from the home and other site pages.

These guidelines are by no means exhaustive, but they are based on the results of an extensive research project conducted by Consumer Reports WebWatch in December 2001 and January 2002; on expert opinion from our board of advisers and other information professionals; and other qualitative research.

ConsumerReports WebWatch plans to use similar methods to develop industry specific guidelines in such areas as travel, financial, health, children's Web sites and others. As we complete our research and form those guidelines, we will publish them here.
